This Suffolk latch is a classic design that has been around since the late 19th century and suits many rural environments. The latch comes in three parts the back plate carries the lever and hinged thumb latch. This is mounted on one side of the gate or door with a slot cut in the wood to allow the lever to pass through to the other side. The hinged latch assembly is mounted on the other side of the door in a position where the latch bar will be lifted up by the lever. The keep is mounted on the doorframe or gatepost at a height where the latch bar will drop easily into it, holding the gate or door closed.
